MedXPress is not the medical exam itself

Completing MedXPress does not mean the FAA has already issued anything. It means you have submitted your application information into the system for review by the AME at your exam. 

Your submission starts a real certification process

The FAA’s “How do I get a Medical Certificate” page notes that your MedXPress application remains active for 60 days and disappears from the system if the AME does not upload it within that period. That is one reason it helps to time your submission carefully and understand the process before you click submit.

The FAA medical can affect your training path

The FAA medical rules in 14 CFR 61.23 spell out when a medical certificate is required and how long different classes remain valid.

A deferral is not automatically a final rejection. It means the case needs additional FAA review.

Denial

A denial is more serious. The FAA’s AME Guide states that an AME denial occurs when the AME determines the applicant is clearly ineligible for certification and provides a written denial letter explaining the reason and reconsideration process. 

That is one reason beginners should avoid treating the application casually. Accuracy and preparation matter.

Special issuance

A special issuance is a pathway under 14 CFR 67.401 that allows a medical certificate to be issued in some cases even when a person does not meet the standard provisions, provided the FAA grants an authorization and the applicant is otherwise eligible. The FAA explains that an FAA physician makes the initial certification decision and may grant an authorization with specific follow-up requirements for future reissuance. 

At a high level, special issuance is the FAA’s way of saying: this case needs individualized review and conditions, not a simple one-visit decision.

Two people can mention the same diagnosis online and still have very different certification outcomes because their medication history, current symptoms, treatment records, testing, timing, and overall file are different. You need a practical explanation in plain English

The FAA’s guidance is authoritative, but not always beginner-friendly. A good AME can often explain the process in more usable terms while still staying grounded in FAA requirements.

A Brief Note About Sport Pilot Pathways

Not every aspiring pilot starts with the same mission.

Depending on your goals and circumstances, some people may also look at the sport pilot pathway. The FAA states that sport pilots may qualify with either a valid pilot medical certificate or a current and valid U.S. driver’s license, subject to the applicable rules and limitations.

That does not mean sport pilot is the right fit for everyone, and it does not erase the importance of understanding the rules carefully. But it is one reason a beginner should think about goals first. The best path can depend on what kind of flying you want to do.
